Swiss Cheese

Maybe it's because it's almost New Year's Eve, and we always make cheese fondue to celebrate, but these alder leaves reminded me a bit of Swiss cheese. It looks like they were tasty back in the day! And they have arranged themselves in such a nice grouping, probably to ride out the winter.

Dog Creek Falls, View 1

Finished up our drive to White Salmon on the Washington side of the river today, so we made a short stop at Dog Creek Falls which is right off Highway 14. A little drizzle was starting so I hurried to the falls to get a few photos before the rain.  And of course I had the wrong lens on the camera, as usual. I took a few close ups before retrieving the wide angle lens from the car.  Here's my tightest view.  I thought it came out pretty interesting. 

Wild Rose Skipper

I am feeling very low energy today, so I decided to search close to home for my photo.  I ventured no further than my own front yard wild rose bush.  I didn't plan to photograph this little butterfly; he was a pleasant surprise!  At first I thought he was a moth, but I did a little research and decided he's a hesperiidae skipper butterfly, which has some moth-like characteristics.  Guess I was just in the mood for a little soft focus today. With my photography and research behind me, I plan to take it easy for the rest of the day.

I'm iffy on this one right now.  I like the white; expecially the variation of white tones.  Still no Imogen Cunningham.  I wanted the focus to be sharper overall, but for a closeup I have to use my macro filter, which by design causes things to fall out of focus.  This photo was taken about 6pm and the daisy was starting to close for the night.  That's why the edges are so fuzzy; they're just too close to the camera.  This daisy, which caught my eye because from a distance it looked like the center was black, is only a block over from my house.  So I came back with my tripod to try to increase the depth of focus with a high aperture long exposure.  Unfortunately the tripod stood the camera up too far from the daisy for a close up.  f/5.6 at 1/30, ISO400, 35mm, +10 macro filter
