Maritime Museum

The Sleeping Bear Coastguard Station Maritime Museum is housed in an old cherry cannery from the early 1900s.  There are a dozen or so historical buildings here from the original company town, but the museum is the only one painted in this cheery shade of cherry red.

Beachcombing

I did my share of beach combing at the Sleeping Bear Maritime Museum beach in Glen Haven, Michigan, along with the other beach-goers pictured here.  It was a perfect late August day for strolling along the shore.  I had a hard time staying away from this snow fence though.  It was so graphically colorful, and an unexpected part of the summer scene here.  The marram grass restoration is visible in the foreground, and in the background you can see one of the Manitou Islands (the baby bears that the sleeping bear is waiting for, if you know the legend.)

Snow Fence

It's really late in the year to see a snow fence still up (or maybe really early?)  But it turns out that this snow fence at the Sleeping Bear Maritime Museum in Glen Haven, Michigan was put up to protect a habitat restoration project.  Marram grass is an important part of the dunes ecosystem, and although I left it out of the photo here, small clumps of the beach grass were already growing in their protected area behind the fence.

Milkweed

I was looking for monarchs today on my walk up here in Northern Michigan.  None to be found, and not as much milkweed as usual either.  I think we see the most monarchs when we visit over Fourth of July, and still see plenty if we visit in the beginning of August. This is pretty late in the summer for us to be visiting. I think the monarchs are probably long gone for the season.  Too bad. Hoping for a good beach photo for tomorrow...

A Boy and His Dog

Eric and Clover explore the coastline at Oceanside Beach near Tillamook, Oregon yesterday afternoon.  It was sunny everywhere except right along the coast.  We're familiar with this weather pattern which is common in Northern California as well.  We didn't mind though; the weather was warm and calm, and I happen to think this mistiness is sort of pretty, and fun to photograph in for a change of pace!

Doing Beachy Things

We got out to the coast today for a relaxing day, touring the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and exploring the beach.  Someone in my family (hint: he's wearing orange) didn't want to have any fun at the beach, but I caught him "doing beachy things" in spite of himself.

It's summertime and you know what that means. Gonna head down to the beach, gonna do some beachy things.

Queen Anne's Lace

We're not moved in yet; still in temporary quarters, but starting to settle in a little and explore the Portland area.  Today we found a running trail with plenty of Queen Anne's lace along the edges. Technically a weed, Queen Anne's lace is one of my favorite "flowers" because it reminds me of childhood summers in Indiana.

Beach Glass Seeds

The town of Fort Bragg is divided on whether the glass at Glass Beach should be collected or not. Some feel it's a local treasure to be protected, while others feel that the glass brings tourism to the town. The curator at the Glass Beach Museum is in the second camp. In fact he thinks that the town should again dump its glass into the ocean. Since glass is made from sand, he considers dumping glass at the beach to be the ultimate form of recycling. At the museum you can purchase glass seeds to "plant" along the shore.  We spotted these freshly planted seeds just before the rising tide swallowed them up.

Glass Beach

Throughout its early history, and in fact up to 1967, the coastal town of Fort Bragg dumped its garbage over a cliff into the Pacific Ocean.  Most of it was burned, but the remaining glass and pottery, churned by the waves, was worn smooth and collected in coves along the shoreline. On our way into town, we stopped in at the Beach Glass Museum for a bit of history on this unusual site.  Well worth the $2.00 admission, we learned what went into the large variety of colored glass that can be found along the beach, and the general use for each color of glass. It was pretty fascinating for a die-hard beachcomber like me. There must have been ten different shades of green alone! After the tour we got a map the the not-so-"secret" beach.  Too much fun for one afternoon!

2014 Calendar!

My new calendar is finally here, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!  I've added a link on the blog for my sale page on Amazon.com.   The cover photo showed up on the blog last October as "Aspen Reflection."  It was taken along the Carson River in Hope Valley, east of Lake Tahoe.

Look Deep Into My Eye...

You want to go to the State Fair...
Ha ha.  A hypnotic ferris wheel photo.  I never know how these are going to turn out.

Well, my time living here in California is almost done.  We've had movers at our house this week, and by next week I'll be on the move back to the Pacific Northwest.  It's been a chaotic summer here, and hardly any time to photograph and post.  I'm looking forward to things settling down for a little while in August so I can get out with my camera again!  Until then, I will post as I can, and get back to following blogs in the next week or two.

Zinnia Patch

What a gem of a place out in Yolo!  The Mezger Zinnia Patch is a two acre field of zinnias, free for  the picking.  With just one stipulation:  However many flowers you pick for yourself, you pick an equal number to give to someone who isn't able to pick them.  Mr. Mezger's cause is bringing joy to retirement communities.  It's such a beautiful field of flowers, and a really heart-warming cause.  The patch is open from sunrise to sunset, and the flowers will be blooming throughout the summer.  To get here, take I-5 north from Sacramento, and exit to the right at Yolo.  Take Old 99 north about two miles.  Just before you get to the Mezger grain elevator, the patch will be on your left.  And if you are in the Sacramento area, and you don't know where to deliver your flowers, I would recommend Emerald Garden Nursing Center.  It's a state nursing center located at 6821 24th St.

At the Bowling Alley

Vending machines reflected in the mirrored ceiling decor at the UC Davis bowling alley earlier today.  I liked the stained glass effect created by the mirror panels.   I wish we discovered this bowling alley before we were getting ready to move, but we're making up for lost time. Today was our second time bowling this week.  It's a welcome break from all the pre-move work going on in the garage!

Hole in the Wall

Literally, not figuratively.  This wall is part of a cute little restaurant near the Co-op.  It's housed in one of those 60s construction buildings, so the little hole drains water off the flat roof, if it ever rains around here.
